Course Content

Section 1: Introduction to Welding
Objective: Students will understand what welding is, its importance in industry, and the various processes used in the trade. You will also learn the essential safety equipment required for welding, why each piece is critical, and how to properly inspect and wear them. Additionally, after this you should be able to identify common hazards in welding environments and learn how to prevent accidents through proper shop procedures, awareness, and behavior. Lastly, learn the key differences between major welding processes, when and why they’re used, and their respective advantages and disadvantages.

  • Lesson 1 Overview Video
  • What Is Welding?
  • Types of Welding and Their Uses
  • Safety First: Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Workplace Hazards and Shop Safety Protocols
  • Section 1 Quiz

Section 2: Tools & Equipment
Objective: Students will understand the basic types of welding machines, how they work, how to set them up, and what process each machine supports. After this, you should be able to identify, handle, and use common welding hand tools for metal preparation, fit-up, measurement, and cleanup. This lesson builds the foundation for safe and effective welding practice. Additionally, expect to learn the role of electrodes and filler materials in welding, understand electrode classifications, and gain the ability to select the proper filler for various base metals and welding processes. Lastly, you will understand the safe handling, storage, and operation of compressed gas cylinders and regulators used in welding processes, including shielding gases for MIG and TIG, and fuel gases for cutting/welding.

Section 3: Materials and Metallurgy Basics
Objective: Students will learn to identify common metals and alloys used in welding, understand their basic properties, and recognize how metal type impacts welding methods and results. You should also understand how heat affects metals during welding, including expansion, contraction, warping, hardening, and cracking, and learn techniques to control these effects for stronger, cleaner welds. You will also learn the five basic types of weld joints, how to identify them in real-world applications, and understand the four standard welding positions. This forms the foundation for welding technique, fit-up, and certification standards.

Section 4: Welding Techniques
Students will learn how to strike an arc and run a consistent bead using Shielded Metal Arc Welding (Stick welding). This lesson focuses on hands-on technique, machine setup, and foundational movement control. Students will also learn how to set up a MIG welder, properly feed wire, strike an arc, and run consistent weld beads by controlling the weld puddle. This lesson emphasizes bead shape, wire speed, voltage, and hand control. Additionally, you can expect to learn the setup, control, and hand coordination required for TIG welding, including torch manipulation, filler rod timing, and gas flow management. This lesson emphasizes precision, cleanliness, and hand discipline. Lastly, you will leave this section understanding how to safely set up and operate an oxy-acetylene rig for welding and cutting. Emphasis will be placed on flame types, proper torch handling, safety procedures, and hands-on metal cutting and fusion.

Section 5: Weld Quality & Inspection
Students will gain an understanding of where and how welding is applied across various industries, including common joint configurations, material types, and real-world use cases. The lesson ties welding fundamentals to practical job-site expectations and fabrication workflows. You will also understand the importance of welding codes and standards, learn about certifying bodies (like AWS, ASME, and API), and explore how welding certifications are earned, maintained, and applied across various industries. Additionally, Students will learn how to prepare for employment in the welding industry by creating a welder-specific resume, understanding what employers look for, and learning what to expect in real-world job site environments.

Section 6: Industry Applications & Certification Prep
